About Us.

Our Story.

We are New Zealand’s leading distributor and manufacturer of quality finished timber products. We are Southern Pine.

Products we produce include mouldings, weatherboards, fascia, boards, paneling, dowel, and jambs made from sustainable New Zealand Radiata Pine.

Southern Pine is part of a group of companies that provide full integration from manufacture through to distribution of New Zealand timber products.

The journey starts with New Zealand Radiata logs arriving at SPP Stillwater sawmill just out of Greymouth, then progressing to SPP Manufacturing in Christchurch, finally SPP Distribution in Christchurch and Auckland distribute the now pre-finished, quality timber products to New Zealand’s leading building merchants.

Full integration of the timber process means control over every step. The result, outstanding quality.

Process

Southern Pine is committed to ensuring sustainable and environmentally responsible materials and processes are used throughout production and distribution. We offer both New Zealand Manufactured timber product and imported timber products. Overseas manufactured timber products imported by SPP, are made exclusively from Radiata Pine managed plantation forests.

FSC® ‘Chain of Custody’

Southern Pine has a proud and longstanding relationship with the FSC® accredited program. Our manufacturing plant that produces Dendro, ECOEDGE and ECOPINE ranges, to name a few, sources material from FSC® accredited suppliers. Our Chain Of Custody is robust and audited every year by SGS New Zealand Ltd.

What is it?

FSC® is a worldwide organisation that monitors the world’s forestry and how it is managed. To prevent the further degradation of world forests, FSC® have implemented a set of guidelines and procedures to ensure a total ecological and sociological umbrella is placed over the forest and all downstream processes. FSC® ‘Forest Stewardship Council®’ Certification means SPP procedures, records, processes and practises are audited to ensure a Chain of Custody (CoC) from the forest to the customer is maintained. This gives the customer assurance that the product they have purchased is grown from responsibly managed forests and from renewable sources.

Why do we need it?

FSC® has stakeholders which include Green Peace and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). FSC® is not aligned with any timber industry or any Government agency. It is seen as an independent and credible international environmental monitoring body. A growing number of consumers want assurance that their timber product is from a responsible resource and will not cause harm to the environment. FSC® provides that assurance.

How do we maintain it?

Strict rules about where we buy logs from, and strict procedures on how we store, process and sell our products. FSC® agents also regularly review and audit our procedures.

Manufacturing.

SPP Manufacturing is based in Hornby, Christchurch and can supply FSC® certified product on request (FSC-C019486). It consists of an MDF moulding factory, a Pine (clear wood) moulding factory, an oil-based paint line, two vacuum paintlines and a WBA H3.1 treatment facility. Treatment of mouldings and weatherboards to H3.1 and H3.2 ensures that a complex range can be manufactured to a high quality standard, efficiently and cost effectively.

Painting/priming

SPP utilise a combination of vacuum and spray line coaters for applying paint to our mouldings and weatherboards. This technology ensures a high-quality finish and even coverage.

Southern

Drymills.

Southern Drymills is a New Zealand company based in Milton, est. in 2021, and owned by Southern Pine Products and Gorton Timber Company. It is an integral part of the timber manufacturing process. Southern Drymills is helping to improve efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint by drying Gorton cut lumber onsite, therefore increasing the quantity of lumber that can be transported and reducing the number of trucks required.

One of the most important aspects of kiln dried lumber production is controlling the moisture content in the wood. Drying the wood effectively until it reaches the proper moisture level is critical for producing quality lumber. Incorrect moisture levels can affect the appearance, dimensions, and durability of the wood. Kilns can be used to dry wood during the lumber production process. Since wood is hygroscopic, it takes on the moisture content of its surroundings, so it is imperative to precisely regulate the environment during kiln drying. Kilns use air flow, steam injections, and temperature to control the humidification of the wood and reach desired moisture levels. Southern Drymills has kilns and boilers which are used to supply steam during this lumber kiln-drying process. High-quality, pure steam is essential for properly controlling the humidity in the kiln.
